Retaining Walls, Drainage & Patio Transformation
Grey County Construction was engaged to transform and improve the property's outdoor area by constructing new timber retaining walls, installing a comprehensive drainage system and creating a finished patio and access area leading to the garage. The project was designed to provide long-term structural support, separate the hardscaped area from the lawn, improve groundwater and surface-water management, and create a clean, functional outdoor space.
The project began with excavation for the retaining wall system and the network of drainage trenches required to manage groundwater and collect water from existing downspouts. The drainage system was designed to direct collected water toward a suitable low point on the property, helping protect the retaining walls and surrounding landscape.
A properly compacted gravel base was then installed beneath the retaining walls to provide a stable foundation. Heavy-duty 6x6 timber retaining walls were constructed, with perforated drainage pipe installed behind the walls and through the prepared drainage trenches. The drainage system was covered with heavy-duty filter cloth and backfilled with clear gravel to provide effective water movement while helping prevent soil from migrating into the drainage system.
Once the retaining and drainage work was completed, river rock was installed as the finished grade treatment around the walls and drainage areas, providing an attractive, low-maintenance finish while complementing the surrounding landscape.
The project also included the construction of a new patio area. The existing area was excavated to the required depth, followed by installation and compaction of a granular base. Patio stones were then installed to create a durable finished surface, with polymeric sand applied to the joints to provide a clean, stable and finished appearance.
To improve access between the yard and garage, Grey County Construction also installed a natural stone step platform, creating a practical and attractive transition between the different elevations.
Project Result
The completed project combined structural retaining walls, comprehensive drainage, finished landscaping and hardscaping to transform the property into a functional and attractive outdoor space. By addressing drainage and site conditions first, then completing the retaining walls, patio and natural stone access, Grey County Construction delivered a coordinated exterior solution designed for both performance and long-term appearance.
